    All About Hushmail

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) of 1996 provides specific regulations to ensure that medical and mental health professionals establish and utilize effective safeguards and protections when electronically transmitting any private, personal, or confidential patient information (Protected Health Information – PHI).

    What is Hushmail?

Hushmail is a HPPA compliant e-mail server that was created in 1999 in response to the HIPPA regulations regarding the electronic transmission of patient PHI.

    How does Hushmail work?

Hushmail an encryption process that “scrambles” the information or data in an e-mail into an unreadable code, thus, preventing an unauthorized individual from being able to access, decipher, or interpret any of the information or data being transmitted. In the process of encryption, the authorized or intended recipient of the information must type in a code or password in order to “unlock” the encrypted code and be able to access and read the information or data transmitted.

    Getting Started with Hushmail

1). Utilizing Hushmail does not require you to subscribe to, or pay for, any special accounts or download any software or programs.

2). When you receive your first e-mail through the Hushmail server, it will come with a link to the Hushmail message center.

3). Once you open the link, you will be asked to create a password (“passphrase”). It is extremely important for you to create a password that you will remember. If you should forget your password, you will be able to reset your account and choose a new password, however, every every Hushmail message (including all attachments, documents, etc.) sent and received prior to the password change will be permanently deleted and unaccessible.

4). After you have created your password, you will be required to enter that password each time you desire to view, access, or reply to any Hushmail message. Please note that you have the option of staying signed in to your Hushmail account for one week at a time. If you choose this option, you will not have to enter your password each time you desire to view, access, or reply to a Hushmail message.  You can choose this option by clicking on the box under the password submission.

5). Your Hushmail message center will display all of your opened and unopened Hushmail messages. In order to better protect the security of your confidential information and data, all of your Hushmail messages are accessible only for a certain period of time.  Thus, each message has an expiration date and time, which will appear clearly on the right hand side of each message.
